MUKU desk clock / zelkova

design : Lemnos Design Group

The MUKU desk clock, which has been well-received since its release in 2012, is now available in zelkova wood. The zelkova wood is made from scraps generated in the clock frame manufacturing process.

By carving a large round shape out of the back of the clock that makes you want to pick it up, a three-dimensional curve appears at the opening, giving it a softer form. The numerical indicators are burnt by branding instead of “colored” as in printing. The shading of the burnt surface and the indentations created by the branding process are unique. Together with the expression of the wood grain, they create a graceful product, no two of which are identical.

[About the manufacturing process]
The clock frame made using woodturning techniques was also cut away in the center. To increase work efficiency, a method of hollowing out the center was added, but this also generates scrap material.

[About Zelkova]
It is mainly used for temple and shrine buildings and high-grade furniture, and is favored as a high-quality domestic material.

[About the grain]
Grain and knots are also characteristics of wood, and each piece of the same product even has a different expression. It is both a characteristic and an interesting feature of products made from natural materials that no two items are the same. Please note that it is not possible to specify the shape and color of the wood grain.
